Internship at Asakusa Mokubakan A Journey Through Japanese Theater and Events, from a French Business Student

Shinohara Engeki is a traditional Japanese theater specializing in Taishu Engeki, a performing art that blends dance and drama into three-hour spectacles. My name is Edgar, I am a French intern currently three months into a four-month program, working within the international team with a focus on marketing and partnerships. Although I am immersed in a Japanese environment, I mainly work in English and handle logistics and stakeholder coordination for events. My responsibilities include creating detailed operation plans, managing deadlines, and ensuring precise documentation to oversee projects from start to finish.

Bridging Cultures through
Event Coordination

My main role at Shinohara Engeki revolves around event organization, particularly logistics and coordination with various stakeholders. I develop comprehensive operation plans for special theater events while managing multiple constraints and deadlines. To ensure each project runs smoothly from beginning to end, and to anticipate potential issues on event days, I rely on rigorous documentation and a deep understanding of every stage of the process.

During my internship, I have worked on complex projects such as the “Kaguya Late Show,” which required detailed operational planning and task redistribution. On May 15, 2026, I will also have the opportunity to use my French language skills to guide the “Les amis de la langue française” association, contributing to intercultural exchange. This experience has shown me how structured the Japanese cultural sector is, where maintaining high quality under tight schedules requires strong organization, adaptability, and quick problem-solving. Overall, this internship has immersed me in Japanese professional practices and strengthened my interest in international work.

A Professional Transformation

Working in the Japanese cultural sector has exposed me to a highly structured professional environment where project management and delivering high-quality results within strict timeframes are essential. Managing a schedule that includes two daily shows has pushed me to develop strong organizational and prioritization skills. I have also learned that adapting to local codes and cultural habits is often more important than technical skills alone. Being able to quickly identify solutions that satisfy all stakeholders has become a key competency in this context.

This internship has provided me with deep immersion in Japanese professional culture and working methods. One of my most meaningful achievements has been earning the trust of the local Japanese teams. Through this demanding yet rewarding experience, I have developed a strong desire to continue growing in complex, international work environments in the future.
