About Popular Theater and Mokubakan

Located in Asakusa, Mokubakan is a rare theater where traditional Japanese performing arts continue to thrive. With roots in the Meiji period, it survived the war (WWII) and began its journey as a popular theater in 1977. Here, you can experience Taishu Engeki up close — a vibrant form of Japanese entertainment enjoyed by audiences for over 100 years.

Q1: What is popular theater?

A1: It is a traditional Japanese performing art that combines drama and dance. Beloved by the public since the Edo period, it features emotionally expressive acting, colorful costumes, and a strong sense of connection with the audience.

Q2: How long is the performance?

A2: Shows usually last around three hours and are divided into two parts: the dramatic play in the first half, followed by the performance part. A break is provided between the two parts.

Q3: I don’t understand Japanese. Can I still enjoy it?

Absolutely! Especially the performance part, you can enjoy expressive dancing, vibrant costumes, and a mix of traditional and modern music – no Japanese skill needed!

Drama part
If you want to watch the drama part as well, it can be a bit challenging if you don’t speak any Japanese.
But in case you want to put your Japanese skills to the test, or just want to enjoy the visual storytelling of the drama part as well – give it a go!
