Kiryuza Koikawa Gekidan is a Taishu Engeki theatre group founded in 1986 originally in the Fukui region in Western Japan, north of Kyoto. It was first founded by Juntayu Koikawa and has been passed down from Father to his first son, and now second son. Juntayu passed the title of Troupe Leader to his first son, Junya Koikawa after 14 years of leadership, in the year 2000. Since 2014, after another 14 years, the now-Chairman Jun Koikawa has taken the lead of the group.
The current Chairman is a true prodigy of the theatre. Born in 1991, and becoming a Taishu Engeki Vice-Chairman at just 9 years old. Due to his experience and hard work, he is a master of versaility.. Whether he is playing a dashing hero, a bumbling sidekick, or performing elegant dances, his talent is boundless. His lifelong dedication to his craft is evident in every movement.
The Kiryuza Koikawa Gekidan group is specifically praised for their “華”, which translates directly to “flower”, but means stage glamour, energy, or charisma on stage in this context. Hailing from the Kaisai region – an area famous for it’s outgoing, humorous and passionate people – this group is exceptionally lively. Don’t be surprised if the actors start chatting away, making jokes, or playfully interacting with each other on stage, or even with the crowd mid-performance. The child performers of Kiryuza Koikawa Gekidan are also especially talented, enough to surprise even the hardcore Taishu Engeki fans.
