Tachibana Gekidan is a Taishu Engeki performance group formed in 1963 in the Oita prefecture, in rural South-West Japan. The group is currently led by Chairman Tachibana Daigoro, a true master of the stage, and in performing Onnagata. So much so, that he has been given the title of “The Prince of Onnagata”.
Chairman Daigoro is a successful actor and also a musician, starring in the famous 2003 film “Zatoichi – The Blind Swordsman”, and recording and releasing his own EP. Due to his expertise and fame, Daigoro has recruited students of Taishu Engeki to the group: Shijo Raimu and Hojo Miki.
The previous Chairman, Kikutaro Tachibana, is the second of his name, inheriting the same name and position from his father before him. As an aging, veteran Taishu Engeki performer, Kikutaro performs in the dance part of the show much less often than his co-performers. Due to the scarcity of his performances, he receives alot of fan support and respect during his short performance.
Tachibana Gekidan is popular for their bright, heartwarming dramas and original shows. It isn’t common to have children perform in Taishu Engeki groups, so Tachibana Gekidan can add extra layers of storytelling through their 3 child actors Kae, Rento, and Mae.
We hope you can come and visit the Mokubakan Theatre and enjoy Tachibana Gekidan’s unique shows. Keep your eyes on our social media for new group announcements.
